Malayalam Vowels and Vowel Signs in InScript
Independent vowels can stand alone; dependent signs combine with a consonant. InScript places many of these forms on paired shifted and unshifted positions.

Independent versus dependent forms
An independent vowel is used when a syllable begins with the vowel itself. A dependent vowel sign attaches to a preceding consonant. For example, ആ stands alone, while ാ combines with മ to form മാ. They look related but play different roles in text.
In the included InScript layout, several unshifted positions produce dependent signs and the shifted partner produces the corresponding independent vowel. This pairing is useful: learn the relationship, then practice which context needs which form.
The main practice pairs
The D position pairs the virama ് with independent അ. E pairs ാ with ആ, F pairs ി with ഇ, R pairs ീ with ഈ, G pairs ു with ഉ, and T pairs ൂ with ഊ. Do not treat the row as a spoken alphabet order; treat each position as a visual and muscular pair.
- Say the output quietly before pressing the key.
- Alternate an independent vowel and a consonant-plus-sign example.
- Pause after a combining sign and observe how the whole grapheme changes.
Build combinations deliberately
When a word contains a consonant plus vowel sign, type the consonant first and then the sign. The sign may render before, after, above, or around the consonant visually, but Unicode input order still follows the underlying character sequence. Trust the target and the grapheme, not only the apparent left-to-right position on screen.
On the Q position, Normal produces the AU length mark ൗ while AltGr+Q produces the dependent AU sign ൌ. The course names the exact chord when the less common Extended output is required.
Worked examples
Standalone vowel
ആ
Shift+E produces the independent vowel used without a preceding consonant.
Dependent sign
മ + ാ → മാ
The sign from E modifies the preceding consonant rather than standing alone.

Common mistakes
Typing an independent vowel after a consonant when the word needs a sign.
Better approach: Look for a combined syllable in the target and use the unshifted dependent form.
Assuming visual order is always keypress order.
Better approach: Enter the consonant first and its dependent sign second, even when the sign renders to the left.
Holding Shift for the entire vowel row.
Better approach: Release Shift after each independent vowel so dependent signs remain unshifted.
Troubleshooting
- A vowel sign appears in a surprising position.
- That may be normal Malayalam shaping. Compare the complete grapheme, not the raw cursor position.
- The sign appears dotted or detached.
- Confirm a compatible Malayalam font is active and that a consonant was entered before the dependent sign.
- Backspace removes more than one visible mark.
- IndicTyping deletes by grapheme cluster, so a consonant and its combining sign may be removed together intentionally.
