Independent and dependent forms
An independent vowel can begin a syllable by itself. A matra modifies the consonant before it. Thus आ can stand alone, while ा combines with क to form का.
Several InScript positions pair an unshifted dependent sign with its shifted independent vowel. Learn each pair together, then practise it in a word.
Input order and visual order
Type the consonant first and its matra second. The sign ि may appear to the left of the consonant after shaping, but the input sequence remains क followed by ि.
Independent vowel
आ
Use the shifted independent form when the vowel stands by itself.
Dependent sign
क + ि → कि
Enter क first and ि second even though the sign renders on the left.
